Random Fact 8: List of countries by beer consumption per capita

with 2 comments

A couple of nights ago I was looking up beer, how it’s made and how they differ on Wikipedia and came across this very interesting list.

The following list as the title of this blog post suggests, is a list of countries ordered by beer consumption per capita (or per person).

Rank Country Consumption
(L/yr)
US
Gallon/yr
Keg/yr
1 Flag of the Czech Republic Czech Republic 156.9 41.5 2.67
2 Flag of Ireland Ireland 131.1 34.7 2.24
3 Flag of Germany Germany 115.8 30.6 1.97
4 Flag of Australia Australia 109.9 29.0 1.87
5 Flag of Austria Austria 108.3 28.6 1.85
6 Flag of the United Kingdom United Kingdom 99.0 26.2 1.69
7 Flag of Slovenia Slovenia 93.3 24.7 1.59[c]
8 Flag of Belgium Belgium 93.0 26.6 1.59
9 Flag of Denmark Denmark 89.9 23.8 1.53
10 Flag of Finland Finland 85.0 22.5 1.45
11 Flag of Luxembourg Luxembourg 84.4 22.3 1.44
12 Flag of Slovakia Slovakia 84.1 22.2 1.43
13 Flag of Spain Spain 83.8 22.1 1.43
14 Flag of the United States United States 81.6 21.6 1.39
15 Flag of Croatia Croatia 81.2 21.5 1.38
16 Flag of the Netherlands Netherlands 79.0 20.9 1.35
17 Flag of New Zealand New Zealand 77.0 20.4 1.31
18 Flag of Hungary Hungary 75.3 19.9 1.28
19 Flag of Poland Poland 69.1 18.3 1.18
20 Flag of Canada Canada 68.3 18.1 1.16

I have only taken the top 20, but you can see more from the original Wikipedia article.

For me it was amazing to see that Czech Republic was the number one consumer of beer. I would have placed all money on someone like Germany, Ireland or even the United Kingdom. Also it’s surprising to see United States so low on the chart when they have so many large beer companies.

But the most shocking was seeing my home country of Australia 4th on the list… I mean we have some of the worlds worst beers *cough* Victoria Bitter *cough* but hey, we do love a cold one :)

All in all, it’s a list I found quite interesting.

  1. I can shed some light on why the Czechs are first. In short, they’ve been making beer for centuries and centuries and they’re bloody good at it. They developed the “pilsener” beer and make some highly commendable others besides, including BB Burgerbrau, which is REAL Budweiser (from the city of Budweis), contrasted with the American donkey’s urine which they have the gall to title “Budweiser”.
