How to use your iPod while charging it through your computer

I have found myself in this situation many times. I have been at uni or on a laptop working away and listening to my iPod when suddenly the little battery bar turns red or you completely run out of juice. If you’re like me you may have a small retractable iPod USB cable that allows you to use your iPod like an external hard drive.

You can charge your iPod by plugging it into the USB port, but once you’ve connected it, the iPod will lock up and flash a “Do Not Disconnect” sign at you therefore making your iPod completely useless for the duration of the charge. One quick and easy solution to this problem is the following:

  1. Connect your iPod to your computer via the USB cable
  2. Open My Computer
  3. Right Click on your iPod
  4. Select Eject

Ejecting an iPod is different to Safely Removing it. By Ejecting it you’re telling the computer not to continue using the device but still give it power, on the other hand Safely Removing the device will completely disconnect it and stop power running to the iPod.

After you have ejected the iPod you are free to use the iPod and at the same time the iPod will be charged through the USB cable.

Please Note: This will not work with iPod Shuffles as they charged through the 3.5mm headphone jack.

Thanks,

Marat
